PM Modi to hand over indigenous Arjun Main Battle Tank Mark to army on Feb 14
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hand over the Arjun Main Battle Tank Mark-1A (MK-1A) to the Indian Army on February 14 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tamil Nadu and Kerala. During his visit he will dedicate the Arjun Main Battle Tank Mark-1A (MK-1A) to the Indian Army. He will also inaugurate various development projects in both the states.
The Arjun Main Battle Tank is an armoured fighting vehicle which is developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army.
The Secretary of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, G Satheesh Reddy said, “It is a great decision by Prime Minister to dedicate MK-1A to the nation by handing it over to Indian Army, giving a message that India stands by its indigenous systems and they would be promoted and encouraged in a big way.”
He also said that it is a great step towards making India self reliant. He said, “People in the country and the organisations should strive in making state of art indigenous systems so that in the upcoming years the armed forces will have the maximum indigenous content based equipment.”
Reddy told reporters that Arjun Main Battle Tank is an all-state-of-art feature incorporated tank with 71 additional features. (ANI)
As per DRDO, the Arjun MBT Mk IA is a state-of-the-art weapon platform with superior firepower, high mobility, excellent protection and crew comfort with 14 major upgrades on Arjun MBT Mk I. (ANI)
According to Reddy, the order for 118 tanks is worth ₹8,500 crore. Around 200 industries are working to deliver the order. He further added, that this provides “employment for more than 8,000 people, which will boost the industries and the country’s economy in a big way.”
He also mentioned that air-to-air missile Astra for IAF & Navy, Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, Air-independent propulsion, ATAGS guns, future aircraft & Medium Power Radar are also in the pipeline.
