Legendary Punjabi folk singer Shaukat Ali passes away

Lahore based popular folk singer Shaukat Ali breathed his last on Friday. The Singer, who passed away at the age of 78, was facing multiple medical issues, including diabetes and a liver transplant. He has been unwell for the past several years.

Famed Punjabi folk singer Shaukat Ali was a well known name among the Punjab community in India as well as in Pakistan.  Ali took Punjabi folk song ‘Chhalla’ to such heights that no other Punjabi singer was able to match it. On Friday, the renowned singer passed away in Lahore.  

Ali had been experiencing multiple medical complications including diabetes and a liver transplant. His health deteriorated after the liver transplant. Few years ago, he had undergone a heart bypass surgery as well. He was being treated at Combined Military Hospital in Lahore.

Shaukat Ali is the father of Pakistani singers — Imran Shaukat Ali, Ameer Shaukat Ali and Mohsin Shaukat Ali.

Ali’s son Ameer informed that the funeral prayers for the departed soul would be offered on Saturday between Maghrib and Isha prayers at Samsani, Johar Town, in Lahore.

The maestro was one of the most prolific artists of the Pakistani music industry. He was also an internationally known cultural ambassador of Pakistan across the world.

While expressing deep grief Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan on Friday prayed for elevation of the departed soul to high ranks. He was sad over the demise of the singer and said that his services in the field of singing in the country will always be remembered.

Former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zadari also condoled the demise, saying with the death of Shaukat Ali, the country has lost a great singer.

Punjabi poet Gurbhajan Gill knew Ali for the past two and half decades. He said that with Ali’s death, Punjab has lost a towering cultural figure.

Shaukat Ali was born on May 3, 1944 in a family of artistes in Malakwal, a town in Gujrat district. He started singing in the 1960s when he was in his college. With a singing career spanning over five decades, Ali was known for his war-time patriotic songs like ‘Saathion Mujahidon Jaag Utha Hai Sara Watan’, ‘Mera Puttar Pakistan Da’, and ‘Apna Quaid Aik Hai’.

The Legendary singer was also a recipient of the Pride of Performance award.
