On Thursday, Hong Kong graduates from Canadian universities can apply for a new category of three-year work permit next week and fresh concerns about China`s clampdown on the former British territory, Canada said.

In June 2020, China imposed a new national security law against Hong Kong. To help them, Canada has taken this step in the campaign. About 300,000 Canadian passport holders live in the city.

The UK, along with Australia, Canada, and the US, also issued a joint statement expressing their deep concern regarding the National Security Law on 28 May as they deemed that the law undermined the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle.

Those with equivalent foreign credentials are also eligible.

Visa recipients can easily make a transition to permanent residency.

“Canada continues to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Hong Kong, and is deeply concerned about the new National Security Law and the deteriorating human rights situation there,” the government said in a statement.

Ottawa suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong and banned the export of sensitive military items after China imposed the law. Hong Kong residents who are currently in Canada can apply online for visas. Eligible spouses or common-law partners, as well as dependent children, can also apply for a study or work permit.

These benefits will be given to residents who hold a Hong Kong special administrative region or a British National Overseas passport, created under British law in 1987 that specifically relates to Hong Kong.
