Guru Ravidas Jayanti 2021: Why and how it is celebrated

On Saturday, Guru Ravidas Jayanti 2021 will be celebrated. This year will mark 644th birth anniversary of Saint Guru Ravidas. Guru Ravidas is spiritual figure and guru.

Guru Ravidas was a very well recognised saint-poet of the ‘Bhakti movement’. He became popular after writing many devotional songs and verses during the movement. His songs had a very lasting impact upon the movement.

About Guru Ravidas

Ravidas was born at Mandhuadhe in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Though his exact date of birth is not known, but it is believed that Guru Ravidas was alive from 15th to 16th century CE and was born during 1377 CE. His birthplace is known as Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan.

He is also known by Raidas, Rohidas and Ruhidas.

Guru Ravidas worked religiously towards reforming the people from social evils such as caste system.

Around 40 of his poems found place in the Adi Granth which is the sacred scripture of Sikhism. It is believed that he was the founder of 21st-century Ravidassia religion. Some of his devotional songs included in the holy Guru Granth Sahib.

It is said that Guru Ravidas also met with the first Guru, Nanak who was the founder of the Sikh tradition.

February 27, 2021 will be observed as the birth anniversary of Ravidas. On February 26, 2021, the Purnima tithi began at 3:49 pm. The tithi will end at 1:46pm on 27th February, 2021.

Why is Sant Guru Ravidas Jayanti celebrated?

As Guru Ravidas was born during 1377 C.E, many people believe that his date of birth falls on the occasion of Magha Purnima. Hence, his birth anniversary is celebrated on Magha Purnima as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Magh Purnima means the full moon day during Magh.

The Jayanti is celebrated in North India. People from Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab celebrate this day with full enthusiasm.

How is the Jayanti celebrated?

The followers of Guru Ravidas celebrate the anniversary by reading ‘Amritbani Guru Ravidas Ji’. They perform a special aarti and take dip in the holy river. The devotees offer prayer in the temples and bhawans.

Shri Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Mandir organises the grandest celebration takes place. Followers from all over the world visit the temple and celebrate the birth anniversary together. The Nagar Kirtan is the highlight of the celebration.  People dress up as Guru Ravidas and his supporters.
