Gangubai Kathiawadi: Police asks protestors in Kamathipura to remove hoardings against the movie

On Sunday, residents of Kamathipura were preparing to protest against the upcoming movie Gangubai Kathiawadi, but before they could start their protest, the Mumbai Police took prohibitive action against them. The local police have taken residents into their custody.

Filmmaker and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming movie, Gangubai Kathiawadi has been surrounded with controversies since its announcement. The movie revolves around the character of Gangubai who is a brothel owner in Mumbai’s Kamathipura. The residents of Kamathipura opposed to the storyline of the movie and raised the issue of the notoriety of their area being revived due to the film.

Years ago, Kamathipura’s name was infamous as a red light area. However, for the last few years, the youth of Kamathipura have tried a lot to change its image.  Hence the upcoming movie was termed as defamatory and shameful by the residents. The youth leader of Kamathipura, Rukesh Giroula, and dozens of his colleagues has named this movement as the voice of Kamathipura.

The people decided to protest on 7th March at 12 p.m. They placed a hoarding at the entry of the main street to explain their point. They demanded the boycott of ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’. On Sunday, the people who gathered in Kamathipura for the protest were taken into custody by the local police. The police objected to the hoardings opposing the upcoming film.

Rukesh who was present at Nagpada Police station said, “Why our township cannot get the status of Sharifs. Why do people like Sanjay Leela Bhansali turn around and scrape our wounds. Kamathipura needs fresh development, people here need employment with dignity, is it a crime to demand?”

According to Rukesh, the protestors sent the information about the protest in advance to the police of the area. But the police did not allow them to hold peaceful protests.

The police have told these people of Kamathipura that they cannot put up such a board. Since Sunday morning, Rukesh and his associates have been kept by the Mumbai Police at Nagpada Police Station.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest offering Gangubai Kathiawadi features Alia Bhatt in the lead. The teaser was launched on Bhansali’s birthday few weeks ago. The film is scheduled to release on July 30.
