Deepika’s ambitious Mahabharata based film put on hold
Before the release of her maiden production, Chhapaak, Bollywood beauty, Deepika Padukone gave her nod to producer Madhu Mantena’s ambitious mythological drama ‘Mahabharat’. The actress agreed and confirmed to do the role of Draupadi in the film. But looks like the film has a huge hurdle in its way.
Few months back, actress Deepika Padukone announced that she would feature in the mythological drama, Mahabharat and would be partnering up with Madhu Mantena to produce the film. She said that she would play the titular role of Draupadi in the movie. But according to the latest Bollywood update the much awaited project has been put on hold.
A source in the industry said, “They announced the film because everyone was excited about bringing something as fascinating and iconic as Mahabharata on the big screen, however, over the last 2 years, they have not been able to lock on a director. The team explored several big names, but couldn’t align to the vision of any. One of the many directors in the race to direct Draupadi was Vishal Bharadwaj, but things fell through. After all these years, buzz is, the film is finally put on hold for the time being and will be revived at a later time frame.”
The film will be revived as soon as the director will be finalised. “They are still keen to make it and will certainly revive it at the right time, on getting the right director. It’s an ambitious film, and requires a certain kind of command over the craft as bringing an epic to the screen is a big responsibility,” the source further added.
After Deepika signed for the role of Draupadi she had told in an interview, about how she felt that this was a role of a lifetime. She said, “I’m absolutely thrilled and honoured to be essaying the role of Draupadi. I truly believe that it is the role of a lifetime. While the Mahabharata is popularly known for its mythological tales and cultural influence, many of life’s lessons are also derived from the Mahabharat but most often from its men. Telling it with this fresh and new perspective will not only be interesting but also very significant.”
Rightnow, it is very clear that her character of Draupadi is stagnant.
Deepika Padukone was last seen in Meghna Gulzar’s social drama Chhapaak (2020). Currently, Deepika has a major project coming up this year. She will be seen opposite King Khan in the movie Pathan. Smaller films like Shakun Batra’s next and The Intern are also added in her kitty.
The audience can’t wait to see this b-town actress in her new projects.
