11-day long lockdown in Bihar till 15 May

On Tuesday, the Bihar government announced a lockdown in the state till May 15 due to the rising Covid-19 cases and continuing shortage of life saving drugs, medical oxygen along with hospital beds across the state. The lockdown will come into effect from 5th May.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Tuesday morning that the state will go into a lockdown till May 15. The CM made the announcement through a tweet in which he said that the decision was taken after meeting with cabinet colleagues and senior government officials on Monday night.

CM Nitish tweeted in Hindi, “After discussion with the associate ministers and officials yesterday, it was decided to implement the lockdown in Bihar by May 15, 2021. In relation to its detailed guidelines and other activities, today the Crisis management group has been instructed to take action.”

The move by the Bihar government came within hours of the Patna High Court’s ultimatum to the state government to declare a lockdown. The court warned that the court may step in as the state government lacked expert advice, trained manpower, adequate oxygen and life saving drugs to deal with the second wave of the pandemic.

The deadly second wave has left hundreds dead and thousands others struggling for hospital beds in the state. Hospitals in Bihar are reporting shortage of medical oxygen and medicine such as Remdesivir to treat the increasing number of Covid-19 patients over the past few days.  Earlier, Bihar imposed a night curfew in the state till March 15. The universities have already been closed down for summer vacation since May 1.

The CM had also announced free COVID-19 vaccination for all adults.

On Monday, Bihar registered 11,407 fresh Covid-19 cases and 82 deaths which took the state’s overall case load to over 5.09 lakh and more than 2,800 fatalities.
